Mustang Journal: 3000 Miles Across America by Horse, Lisa F. Wood

Award-winning author Lisa Wood has created another extraordinary adventure.  At age forty, she partnered with Shawnee, a castoff pinto mustang, on a 3,000-mile journey across the United States.  Captured on public land as a filly, Shawnee was isolated and neglected for years.  As a result, she harbored many phobias, from sheep to peacocks.  Seasoned equestrians ridiculed her, but Lisa saw something special in the little wild mare:  a powerful magic hiding beneath her scrawny looks.

Starting on the historic Kearny Trail from California to New Mexico, Lisa and Shawnee then followed the covered-wagon ruts of the Santa Fe Trail, and the stone bridges of the Old National Road.  Tossed by tornadoes, baked by the sun, and pounded by hail, they crossed the nation, meeting fascinating human and animal characters along the way.  Finding warmth and hospitality when it was most needed - and often least expected - the two travelers came to know Americans who had suffered great loss, and yet responded with generosity.

Inspiring and humorous, this is a story for everyone who wants to live life to the fullest.  It offers insight into the nature of self-imposed limitations, and kindles hope for a better tomorrow - the best reason to take that first step out the door.
